Which Game Of Clue Is This?
For this article, I’m talking about the Clue (2018) version. There are tons of versions of Clue and more are being made every year, but this is the version I’ll be focusing on here since as of November 2022 it’s the most up-to-date mainline version of the game.
What Makes Clue What It Is?
There are a few elements that make Clue the kind of game that it is. There’s the theme, which is a dinner party at a mansion in which someone has committed a murder. Solving that murder is your task.
There’s the type of game it is, which is a deduction game. You’re making good guesses to figure out who committed the murder, with what, and where. There are also the game mechanics of rolling and moving to get to different locations around the board.
There’s also the art style which is warm and colorful. It’s traditional, but it does a good job of conveying the information that needs to be conveyed.
There’s also how difficult the game is. In this case, there are only a few rules, which are not difficult at all.
Lastly, there’s how long it takes. This can vary depending on how the game unfolds, but it usually takes anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour.
What Type Of Person Would Most Enjoy Clue?
So, with all that being said, what type of person would most enjoy Clue? Well, let’s start with who Clue isn’t for.
What Type Of Person Is Clue Not For?
Clue is not for people looking for games with deep strategy. Clue is also not for people looking for something that can fill up all the hours of a game night (unless you play Clue multiple times, that is). Additionally, Clue is not for children under 8, although I suppose it could be if you think they could grasp it.
Clue isn’t for people like myself who have massive board game collections and play lots of creative and forward-thinking games. It could be, and I’m sure some will disagree with me on this point, and that’s okay with me. I just don’t see myself reaching for Clue on a game night when I could pick many other games that have improved rulesets and even more interesting themes.
The Type Of Person Clue Is For
For the most part, Clue is for families and friend groups looking for an easy game to play on game night. Why is this the case? Well, if you’re going to involve kids in a game night in some way, the games you play have to either be fun, short or both. Clue hits both of those.
If you’re going to have a family game night, then the games have to appeal to the kids as well as the adults. That means the games have to have at least some strategy to them, some depth, otherwise, the adults will get bored. Clue does this too as you move around the board and try to figure out the murder, but it’s not so difficult to do this that kids 8 and up don’t get it.
As for groups of friends, Clue is a good choice because of all the same reasons above. It’s something that everyone can immediately understand and enjoy. After all, who doesn’t like a good murder mystery?
So, ultimately Clue is for families and groups of friends looking for something easy, fun, and interesting. Also, the people playing it have to not care too much about the production quality of the components because, well, they get the job done but they’re not high-quality by any means.
