What Type Of Game Is Clue?

Maybe you’re just hearing about Clue for the first time, or maybe you’re just curious to learn more about it. Either way, today we’re going to explain what type of game Clue is. So, what type of game is Clue?

Clue is a deduction game that uses roll and move and guessing mechanics.

What Are The Types Of Games?

There are many different ways to categorize games. There’s the theme, the art, the game mechanics (the way it plays), how big it is, how long it takes, how easy it is, and so on. There’s also the type of game that it is such as it being a deduction game, party game, programming game, or some other type of game.

To me, the type of game is where you might find it on a shelf in a store. Typically, stores organize games either alphabetically or by age group, but occasionally they’ll organize them by type of game. I went to a store recently that did this, and I thought it was a good idea.

Why The Type Of Game Matters

The type of game matters the same way a genre matters to a reader. It’s a way to find things they’re interested in and know if that game or book is one of them. Themes do this for board games too, but themes aren’t everything.

Here’s an example of a game theme that doesn’t give you enough details to know if you’d like the game or not: Lovecraftian. There are so many different types of games that use Lovecraft as a theme! Mansions Of Madness 2nd Edition, A’Writhe, Lovecraft Letter, Pocket Madness, Elder Sign, Unspeakable Words, Don’t Mess With Cthulhu, and so many more.

In that list of games are the following types of games: dungeon crawl, dexterity, party, card, dice, and word-based (spelling). So, just saying the theme doesn’t do enough. The mechanics might, but not everyone knows what game mechanics are, and game type is a nice way to give a good idea of what to expect.

So, with all that said, what type of game is Clue?

What Type Of Game Is Clue?

The front and back of the box for Clue the game.
You can tell a lot about the type of game based on the box cover.

Clue is a deduction game. The whole goal and feel of the game are that you are trying to figure out who committed a murder, and you’re doing that by crossing suspects, weapons, and rooms off your list. You have to use your wits and have a little bit of luck (or maybe a lot of luck), but ultimately you are deducing the details of the murder.

Now, Clue might be a deduction game, but as far as how that game is played out through its mechanics, well that belongs to the guessing and roll and move mechanics. Guessing because you’re guessing at information, and roll and move because you have to roll a dice and move that many spaces.

These simple mechanics and game type have led Clue to a long and successful board game life that seems to have no end in sight.
