What’s The Story In Clue?
Long story short, Mr. Boddy owns the mansion the game takes place in. He invites Miss Scarlet, Colonel Mustard, Mrs. Peacock, Mr. Green, Professor Plum, and Dr. Orchid to join him for a night of fun. Unfortunately, the night doesn’t end up that way.
Who Is Mr. Boddy?
Mr. Boddy doesn’t just own the mansion, he’s also the person you’re trying to solve the murder about. Someone killed him before the game even started! According to Clue’s story, someone was trying to keep him quiet.
This was because Mr. Boddy knew all the guests’ secrets and was threatening to expose them. Some party.
Where Did The Characters’ Names In Clue Come From?
The character names in Clue have a variety of backstories and interesting facts. To start with, the characters’ last names were based on the color of their pawn piece. So, for example, Professor Plum’s piece is purple because it goes along with his name. Mr. Green’s piece is green, Miss Scarlet’s piece is red, and so on and so on.
But did you know that not everyone’s name started out that way? One example of this is Colonel Mustard, who was originally Colonel Yellow. Since yellow also means cowardly (such as it did in the Wild West) it was thought that having a soldier referred to as cowardly would be a bad idea. Also, Mr. Green was originally Reverend Green, but it was decided that it would be a bad idea to have a priest potentially commit murder.
What Happened to Mrs. White?
So, you’re probably wondering what happened to Mrs. White. Unfortunately for Mrs. White, Dr. Orchid replaced her (some orchids are pink). Coincidentally, according to Clue’s story, Mrs. White raised Dr. Orchid. Also, Mr. Boddy adopted Dr. Orchid when she was a child, giving her another tie to the events in the game.
Dr. Orchid was also adopted by Mr. Boddy, the owner of the mansion in Clue.
So, why did this happen? That’s a little harder to answer since the makers of the game, Hasbro, haven’t made this clear. However, the game company has updated other characters over the years. For example, Colonel Mustard is now a former football star and Professor Plum is a maker of video games.
What seems to be going on is that Hasbro is trying to be conscious of the times (for reference, Clue was created in 1947). Mrs. White was removed to make way for a female character with a doctorate degree. Some of the character’s backstories were updated to reflect what kids are into these days to give them a better connection to the game.
