Ever played the game, Trouble? If you have, then you know exactly what a pop-o-matic bubble is.

However, if you’re still not sure, a pop-o-matic bubble sits in the middle of a game board. It’s a half-sphere of plastic with a die or dice sitting inside. Players push down on the bubble then release, which pops and rolls the die.

Admittedly, it’s a great invention that’s a lot of fun. It’s also a really interesting way to roll a die.

What Is Trouble?

Trouble is a game that was eventually published by Milton Bradley, which was eventually bought by Hasbro. It was first published in 1965 and it was designed by Frank Kohner, Paul Kohner, and Fred Kroll.

How To Play Trouble

Trouble is an incredibly simple game. Your goal is to get all your colored pegs around the board and to the finish.

On a player’s turn, they pop the pop-o-matic bubble. If they want to move a peg out of its home spot, they have to roll a 6. Otherwise, they can pop any number and move that peg as many spaces as the number shows.

If their peg lands on another player’s peg, that player’s peg goes back to its home spot. There is a little strategy in Trouble in terms of deciding which peg to move when, but other than that it’s a silly game that’s fun to just sit down and play.

Are The Board Games That Feature The Pop-O-Matic Bubble Just A Gimmick?

I think you could argue this, but then so are many other things in board games. Colt Express is one of my favorite games, but it didn’t need to have the 3D train. The 3D train adds a lot to the experience and it’s a super cool piece, but it’s not necessary.

The same is true for the pop-o-matic bubble. It isn’t necessary at all, but it adds a neat twist to the Trouble experience.
