Should You Consider Connect 4 Grab & Go When Traveling?

Connect 4 Grab & Go feels like a cheap cash grab at the expense of travelers. At least, it did to me at first. But is that what it is? Should you consider Connect 4 Grab & Go when traveling?

You should consider Connect 4 Grab & Go when traveling. It’s well-made, stores well, is built so there’s no mess, and can be used almost anywhere.

What Is Connect 4 Grab & Go?

Connect 4 Grab & Go is a part of Hasbro’s Grab & Go line of games. This line also includes games such as Monopoly Grab & Go, Clue Grab & Go, Sorry! Grab & Go, Guess Who? Grab & Go, Battleship Grab & Go, and Hungry Hungry Hippos Grab & Go.

This line of games is intended for people to take with them when they’re traveling. In fact, you’ll see these games also referred to as travel-sized games.

As far as Connect 4 Grab & Go goes, it is the exact same game as Connect 4 except it’s smaller. To give you an idea of how much smaller, the box size for the Grab & Go games, Connect 4 Grab & Go included, is 10 in x 6 in (length x width). Connect 4 is 10.51 in x 10.51 in.

To be honest, when I was researching the differences in size, I thought the Connect 4 Grab & Go version would be way smaller. It’s approximately half the size, but the numbers just surprised me.

What Are The Differences Between Connect 4 Grab & Go And Connect 4?

Connect 4 and Connect 4 Grab & Go side by side on a table.
I accidentally set both of these up the same way. Imagine that!

So, it’s not just the game box that’s smaller. The Connect 4 Grab & Go version is also smaller than the regular Connect 4 version. It also assembles and operates differently too.

So, the first noticeable difference is that the Grab & Go version has a bowl that sits underneath where you drop the discs. It comes in two halves and you have to attach them to the bottom. This is an interesting addition to Connect 4 because it will catch all the discs once you slide the disc stopper so that they can fall through the grid.

Also, you store the discs on these two plastic sleeves on the sides of the grid. You can close the tops of the sleeves and the bottoms hold the discs unless you want to pull them out, which is not the easiest to do but also not the hardest either.

These additions make this a version of Connect 4 you could reasonably play anywhere. While I haven’t traveled with it myself, I did play around with it on my desk while writing up this article. Suffice it to say, there was no mess, it was easy to operate and clean up, and I did manage to beat myself.

Hurrah!

Should You Consider Connect 4 Grab & Go When Traveling?

Here’s what I think is so cool about Connect 4 Grab & Go. Admittedly, at first, I thought it was a stupid gimmick game that didn’t really do anything other than trick people into giving away money they didn’t need to, but its magic started revealing itself once I started playing around with it.

My Childhood Travel Story

For example, my parents used to take my younger brother and me on vacations in Florida (Destin for life!). It was a 12-hour drive at the very least. My parents, being the smart parents they were, knew they would have to entertain us for those 12 hours while making sure we reached our DESTINation (yes, that was on purpose, and I’m not apologizing for it).

So, we would bring things with us such as Gameboys (remember those?) and books. This was the ’90s so we didn’t have iPads, or smartphones, and we never had a portable DVD player either.

Every so many hours, our parents would give us a gift such as a new Gameboy game, a book, and even action figures. I can confidently say this tactic worked and to this day I still remember the rubber Star Wars action figures I got and how disappointed I was in them, haha. But it was still cool to get them, and I still remember getting the Gameboy games too.

But what if we got travel-sized board games like Connect 4? How long would that entertain my brother and me? Well, I can’t go back in time, and I don’t have kids myself, but what I do have is my imagination.

Imagining The Possibilities

And I imagine with the way Connect 4 Grab & Go is built, it would go pretty well. Would every family and kid love it? No, especially not with all the aforementioned technological advances. It’s hard to compete with literal computers in kids’ hands, but I could still this game doing nicely with the right family.

Honestly, the way it’s built, it could be used in cars, on planes, on a picnic table, at the beach, or wherever else that has a stable, flat surface to use it on.

Could the discs get lost? Totally. Could a mess still happen? Absolutely.

But with the way this game is built, it’s easy to store, easy to use, it does not feel cheaply made, and it seems like a fun way to pass the time.

As an aside, I just tested if the discs will fall out of the sleeves if I turn the game upside down. And I’m happy to say they don’t!
